How do Infectious Disease doctors solve cases?
Every patient is different, but the approach to each case can be summarized in the following steps:
- Identify the question to be answered: does the patient have a diagnosis? is treatment needed? How recurrence is prevented?
- Gather data: by asking questions, reviewing laboratory tests and examining radiological studies
- Analyze data: put all above information together
- Generate differential diagnosis: a list of the most likely diagnosis and other close possibilities
- Make recommendations: additional testing, treatment plan
- Generate a contingency plan: what else to do if the initial diagnosis or treatment plan do not work?
- Communicate to the patient
- Follow up patient to case conclusion
